The field of extended reality (XR), encompassing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), is well beyond the point of being considered a niche subject or a gaming novelty. Dedicated hardware is still paramount to applications such as training, simulation and virtual environments. But XR is also present in the screens of our offices, living rooms and hand-held devices.
Improvements on signal and image processing, hardware, algorithms and sensors enable an unprecedented level of interactivity in XR these days. Combining visual, audio and haptics modalities provides immersion like never before. Both tendencies are set to accelerate further with the advancement of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The kind of ubiquitous computation needed in XR demands of improved batteries, higher communication bandwidths, and more energy-efficient systems. Perhaps more important are the challenges that come from higher prevalence and a broader user base, such as “cybersickness”, privacy, and platform fragmentation. On the other hand, one of the biggest opportunities of XR is that it may act as a driving force to the continuous advancement of technology towards a more efficient, reliable, and safe computation paradigm.
This panel aims to serve as a unique forum to address key technology aspects, from research and development to practical applications, of XR including signal processing and adaptation, sensors and ambient awareness, connectivity and network linking, systems architecture, silicon convergence, software and service platforms, security and quality of experience (QoE).
